The purpose of cost estimates

Estimating the manufacturing cost of electrical machines is a difficult enterprise. Nevertheless it is necessary to have an understanding of the cost drivers in order to evaluate business opportunities.

Exact or not exact?

Cost estimates of electrical machines tend to be inexact for different reasons. We propose here an estimation based on simple models which we have found quite accurate.

How does it work?

Modern electric drive systems are sophisticated. The two main elements, motor and controller, are specifically designed to operate with each other. They are analyzed as a system.
The cost models for both – motors and the chosen controllers – differentiate the contributions of the different machine types and their respective components. Costs, mass and bulk of a given type and power are estimated. The results are fine-tuned with the fractional distribution of cost and mass of the different elements of each system.

While it is not always true that the power of a motor is a direct function of its mass, the two variables are related. However, care must be taken when using these numbers for costs estimates.
